Phantasy Star 2
This is my new passion. I am absolutely in love with the Phantasy Star series. Phantasy Star II is the one I'm playing at the moment. Normally, I'd rather beat the game before I give a review on it, but with PSII, I'll make an exception.
Phantasy Star II takes place 1000 years after Phantasy Star. It takes place on the second planet of the system, Mota/Motavia. Everything is run by a massive computer called Mother Brain (Gee... that was used three years before in 1986, on the original Metroid :-). However, things have been going wrong. Bio-Monsters have been everywhere on the planet. What is the mystery behind all this? What's the cause? Is it Mother Brain?
The main character, Rolf, is an Agent working for the Motavian government. He is sent out with is friend Nei, who is a genetic construct of human and bio-monster cells, to find the source of the problem.
Graphic-wise, Phantasy Star II has great graphics for 1989/First Generation MegaDrive/Genesis. They stand up well, even with today's latest, like Xenosaga for POS2.
PSII has pretty good music overall. The battle music is very catchy, as is the victory music. The world map music is fairly catchy as well. All in all, great music overall.
Gameplay wise, PSII is fairly like every other RPG. Its battle system is SLIGHTLY different. After you enter a command, if you don't hit any buttons, it will use those same commands, and the game will continue the battle without no interuption in the action. This is very helpful, as you don't need to keep pushing buttons all the time. You can just look away, until the very cool victory music hits. However, you'll still need to pay close attention. I had to scramble in order to bring my party members back up to health at some points. If you choose to play through Phantasy Star II, prepare for some MASSIVE dungeon crawling. Even with maps, it still took me quite a bit of time on order to get through them. Shure and the Bio-Systems Lab being the two toughest so far.
From what I've played so far, Phantasy Star II is a very enjoyable game. I'm especially looking forward to Phantasy Star IV, but I'll have to beat PSIII first.
