Beat PSII, Playing PSIV
Well, I beat Phantasy Star II a little over a month ago, and now I'm playing Phantasy Star IV. I must say PSII was AWESOME! Sure, the endless dungeon crawling drove me completely insane at times, and yet I just continued playing. It's a very addicting game. The music is fantastic (The World Map music on Dezoris I just love!) as is the battles. Now, after completing PSII, Final Fantasy X has really dropped on my list of favorite games. Simply because Square ripped off a lot of plot elemnts from PSII into FFX. Also, my respect for Square has dropped a bit. That coupled with FFX-2 which is just gonna suck so much, I am DONE with FF for now. Here's hoping FFXII won't rip off PSIV or something. Now, if only Sega will publish those Phantasy Star remakes over here in the states... (PLEASE SEGA PLEASE!!!!) Oh yeah, about the lack of updates, I haven't talked to Pedro in a long time, and I've been terribly lazy. Hopefully I'll stop being so lazy. But there's a lack of Phantasy Star news to report, that's one reason for my lack of activity. Also, Be sure to check out The Phantasy Star Pages for PS stuff. I'm on the discussion board every noe and then (RolfAshley is my name), also, that's usually the place to go for PS News as well. Not to mention the Fanfic seciton is just HUGE!

Final Fantasy Origins Released Yesterday
FFO was released yesterday by Square EA. I WAS gonna pre-order it, however, I got too caught up in buying MegaDrive/Genesis games (Got five coming in next week), not too mention, I'm now a Phantasy Star Phiend. Not a FF Fanboy (I used to be one unfortuantely, as with Sony). However, I'm tired of Final Fantasy (I've stated that MANY times I know), although I do plan on buying Origins, along with every other Square game for PSX. Also, about my review of PSII. Once I actually beat the game, I'll revise it a bit, make it longer, more concise and complete. One of the MD/Genny games I purchased is an PRG (Ys III). I played the ROM a bit before buying it (Gimme Carts and Originals over ROMs and CD-Rs anyday!), and I must say it is a pretty cool game. Side-scroller RPG like Popful Mail for Mega/Sega CD (another great game, for the best of the "16-bit" consoles, which was the Mega CD). Sega/Sonic Team is releasing Phantasy Star Online (I want Phantasy Star V!) for the XBox, can't remember when. It might have even been released already! I don't pay attention to the POS2, XBox, and GC all that much. I love my Saturn, Dreamcast, Mega/Sega CD, MegaDrive/Genesis, and 32x much more than any of them. Gimme me old-school over the "Current Generation" anyday. Although the DC is considered old-school and "dead" (Gimme a break!), look at the POS2, XBox, and GameCube! They're 128-bit (who goes by "bits" nowadays anyway?) consoles as well. Well... I wouldn't even call the POS2 a console, it's more of a... well... just look at the console name I've given it. The Dreamcast is NOT Dead! Nor is the Saturn, Mega/Sega CD, OR MegaDrive/Genesis.

Bah... I really need to stop rambling on so much in my newsposts. Later!

Two new reviews up!
There are two new reviews available, both by Cloud. He had already handed'em to me earlier this week, but I've been too damn busy. I got a couple of tests tomorrow (I'm screwed beyond screwedness... if screwedness exists, of course). Anyway, since I had told him that both revs would be up by this weekend, I took some time off my study and placed'em on-line.
The games he chose to review are Phantasy Star 2 (Sega Genesis) and Chrono Cross (PlayStation), so make sure you drop by our reviews section and check those two out. I completely disagree with his CC review (I'm a Chrono Trigger kind of guy), but the review's pretty cool... be sure to drop by our forum and comment these two new additions :).

Shining Soul Sequel Release Date Set and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Tentative Release Date
The latest game in Sega's long running Shining series (Shining Force being the most well known), Shining Soul 2 for the Game Boy Advance, will be released on July 7th 2003 in Japan. The original sold fairly well, so sales for this sequel are expected to go just as well. However, with the original still not having been released over here in the States (in Pedro's case, Europe), chances are this will not be released in the States either. Well.. at least until the original makes the trip.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. This is old news (by a few days) but Square's Final Fantasy game for Nintendo GameCube is scheduled for a summer release in Japan.

Unfortunately... nothing new concerning Phantasy Star V :-( Perhaps PSV is nothing more than a simple rumor... However, while the PSV rumor is VERY old news (since November), I remember that Yuji Naka and the rest of Sonic Team were throwing game ideas around. Perhaps Phantasy Star V is one of them... PS fans, keep your fingers crossed (I know I will :-)) perhaps Sonic Team will shed some light on this rumor within the coming months.

Update: Looking at some other RPG sites, I noticed that the original Shining Soul was released in Europe for the Game boy Advance.

Not exactly RPG related but...
Yo, at SegaXtreme, which is where I spend most of my time online, is having a Saturn coding contest! If you want to participate, you need to be a member of the message board (I think anyway...). If you don't want to be part of the contest, be sure to check out the Saturn Development section. It's absolutely loaded with everything you need to start programming for the Sat. Also, should you do sign up for the message board, PLEASE read the Help & FAQs section beforehand. Later!

Reviews are coming!
Yo! I just finished writing a massive review for Chrono Cross, and one that's a little on the short side for Phantasy Star II! I'm sending them to Pedro now, so he can upoad them. Look for them within the next week or two (Pedro's very busy). Final Fantasy X-2 has already sold over Two Million copies in Japan. Uh... yay... I guess... I'm kinda sick and tired of Final Fantasy. Don't get me wrong, I'll always be an FF fan, but all this hype and publicity is bothering me. Not to mention all the fanboys, who probably haven't even played a Phantasy Star game (No.. PSO does NOT count!). The same fanboys who flock towards Sony and their vastly overhyped and underpowered POS2. I'm proud to be a Phantasy Star Phan. Makes me different from the the damn fanboys. Not to mention, my huge loyalty towards Sega and the Saturn. Is Sega gonna make a Phantasy Star V or not? I'll need to keep looking into that... Oh yeah, in a recent interview, Sega has confirmed that Skies of Arcadia 2 will be developed. Hopefully NOT for POS2. Sorry, I'm in a bit of a bad mood, Iowa State just lost to Iowa 54 - 53 in the NIT. First they've ever met in post-season play. But... I still hate Sony :-)

Misc. Tidbits
I just won the Phantasy Star games for MegaDrive off of eBay. Now... I have been saying lots of things like "this section is coming up" and/or "these reviews are coming up" But now... I'm being serious! I'm working on a review for Chrono Cross (The Greatest Game behind FFVII and FFX) now, and I'm gonna send it to Pedro (JediMaster for those who don't know), then he'll upload it. For once, I can backup my words! The problem with the Dreamcast section is that, I still don't have Grandia 2, OR Skies of Arcadia yet. Nor, have I beaten any of my Mega CD RPGs (Vay is hard as hell!). Phantasy Star is my new passion. Quite frankly, I'm not all that interested in FFX-2 (unless Tidus is in it and playable of course), all I care about right now is PSII, PSIII, and PSIV. I sure as hell hope the rumors about Phantasy Star V are true. Although... it really sucks that that and the PS remakes are gonna be on that piece of crap PS2. Oh yeah, on another note, with the FFX-2 thing, Square might do an FFVII-2. Why though? Just release an extended ending DVD or something, that just shows what happended after Meteor was destroyed by Holy and the Lifestream. Anyway, enough of my rambling. I'm gonna be updating more often.

The Two Towers
I went to see this movie tonight. Yeah, I know it's already on its third week, but... at least this way we got the best seats in the cinema :). If you haven't seen it, then get the hell up, grab some warm clothes if you're in Europe (nasty bit of weather here) and go to the nearest cinema, cause this movie is incredible. In my personal opinion, it beats the book. I think that a fairly good amount of details were changed, but globally it was for the best. If the first movie was amazing (although not as good as the book), this one is a serious candidate for the "Best Movie I've Seen So Far" award. Feel free to agree or disagree with me in the Forum :).

Final Fantasy X-2
Square is currently working on a new project that would probably make alot of gamers happy. Whenever you finish a Final Fantasy game, don't you ever wonder "what happened to those characters?". I know I do, so in answer to our question, Squaresoft (or SquareEnix...whatever you want to call it) is releasing the first 'sequel' to a Final Fantasy game. It is tentatively title 'FFX-2' and is the sequel to, of corse, Final Fantasy X. I have some few minor details, but right now I am working with JediMaster to get a section up all about this game. I have tons of info, but don't want to put it all right here. So, I have condensed what I know.

The game revolves around Yuna, and her journey of self discovery; expect it to tie in as well with the special ending for Final Fantasy X International, which was released only in Japan.

Yuna is now outfitted in a much more revealing get up, apparently our quiet little summoner has 'found herself'. She now carries big guns, can jump, run and grab onto ledges. The only confirming returning character at this time is Rikku, but we are sure to see more characters, and a lot more locations from the first game. The outlawed Al Bhed Machinery is now making a large impact in the world, even being used at Yevon temples. Yuna will be travelling with two other female characters (At least at this time that is all that is known), one using a sword and the other using some weird blade thing.

That is all I know, but if this section works out, I will be able to feed you all types of info!

The Lord of the Cellphones
New Line Cinema has reached an agreement with Verizon Wireless to bring the two remaining movies based on Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" books to the cellphone market. The content provided will be mainly in two forms: chatrooms and games.
A co-branded website has also been developed in order to carry exclusive content. You can visit it at http://www.verizonwireless.com/lotr.

Square and Enix Merging?
Yes, people. This merger is HUGE. There is no doubt about it. Soon to be complete in late 2003 should be the biggest merger in the history of RPGs. Square brings their forumla from Final Fantasy, and Enix bring along their forumla from Dragon Quest. If you ask me, I smell REALLY good games in the future.
Some bits on the merger
  • The CEO of Square Enix will be current Square president, Yoichi Wada.
  • Enix's Chairman, Yasuhiro Fukushima, will stay as chairman of the company
  • The company's headquarters will be located at the current Enix HQ in Tokyo

Other than that, details are still a bit fuzzy. I am working hard to find out as much as possible, esspecially the games they have planned. If I know Squaresoft, and I know Enix, their games will be amzing.

    Fourth aniversary and new poster
Damn, I don't know how I forgot this... you boys and girls can't imagine how busy I've been lately (although you can check some of the reasons at http://pedroamaro.pt.vu). Anyway... I completely forgot to post something here about RPG Channel turning four years old on the 23rd of October. Yep, we're as old as Penny Arcade, for example. "Shame on me" is all I can say... and I hope I won't forget our fifth "birthday" :).
I'd also like to welcome our new poster, Jekel. Hope you'll have fun working here! :)

    Saturn programming
Some days ago, Cloud told me an URL where you could find some information regarding Saturn programming... meanwhile, I've received an e-mail from a site visitor asking me the status of the Shining Force 3 translation patch projects... all the projects I knew were cancelled due to lack of information or time. There's not much I can do about the lack of time, but if there's anyone out there who doesn't try a project of this type due to lack of information, check out this site where you can find precious documents and programs that might ease up your work: http://www.helsinki.fi/~ammonton/sega/docs.html.

    Been awhile....
Man, I've been lazy this summer. Yes, we ARE still around. The hosting service person asked Pedro if we were still around, and he said we were. Hmm... lots of FF news since MY last update. I beat FFX on June 1st (Sad ending, I cry everytime I see it, I can't even listen to the Mp3 without breaking down :)), I beat Chrono Trigger a couple weeks ago. Now I'm nearing the end of Chrono Cross. I'm trying to decide between Lunar (Sega CD), Xenogears (PSX), or FFVI (SNES) on which I should play next. Hmm... Remember the Sega CD section I was talking about last December? Well.. that WILL come up, once I beat of of my four Sega CD RPGs. I've been meaning to write a few reviews (FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, etc.) but I've just been WAY too damn lazy! I haven't even updated my OWN site that much (I think once this whole summer!) Also, once Pedro finds a good server, I'll be managing the ROMs/Games section. I will try to update you on all the Square news startin next time there IS Square news to report. Also, since I got my Dreamcast last January, I will be getting Grandia 2 soon, then once I beat that, and write a review, a DC section will go up (A lot of people have been requesting that, not surprised, since Sega rules all! :)) Sorry, for the LONG update, but I wanted bring you up to speed on the situation.

    Be all you can be!
As you've probably noticed, RPG Channel is a bit short on the staff department. This basically means that we need more heroes in our party to provide news and reviews in order to prevent evil forces from taking over the world! Well, this isn't a pay-job but, like in most RPGs, we can offer you some experience and a lot of fun :). If you want to be a reviewer, news poster, hint writer or help us in any other way, send an e-mail to rpgchannel@hotmail.com
